Ruysbroeck the Admirable, (Paperback)

"Ruysbroeck the Admirable" is a comprehensive biographical and critical study of Jan van Ruysbroeck, one of the preeminent Flemish mystics of the fourteenth century. This work explores the life, historical context, and profound spiritual doctrines of a man whose writings significantly influenced the development of Western mysticism. The narrative follows Ruysbroeck's journey from his service as a secular priest in Brussels to his withdrawal into the forest of Soignes, where he founded the priory of Groenendael and composed his most influential theological treatises.
The author meticulously situates Ruysbroeck within the social and religious currents of the Middle Ages, examining the influence of Neoplatonism and his relationship to the Devotio Moderna movement. By analyzing his core concepts regarding the soul's ascent toward divine union, the text provides deep insight into the medieval contemplative tradition. "Ruysbroeck the Admirable" remains an essential resource for scholars and readers interested in the history of Christian thought, medieval philosophy, and the lives of the great saints. It offers a detailed portrait of a spiritual giant whose legacy continues to resonate within the study of mystical literature and historical theology.

This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
